On the grounds of the Federal Horticultural Show Mannheim, you can expect a colorful program for young and old on the topic of democracy, political decision-making processes and the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Mannheim. At workshops, lectures and hands-on activities with speakers from politics and administration, you can get involved, join in the discussion and immerse yourself in the world of democracy, politics and the implementation of sustainability: For a Mannheim and a world without hunger, with education for all, with a planet where animals and humans can live well together and have clean water. URBAN LAB 5 // WS Added Value of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals for Cities and Regions and Related: Voluntary Local Reviews
Achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN is now a widely shared goal. How can success be measured and, above all, compared internationally? Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) serve this purpose. This is a stocktaking and interim status of target achievement. Many municipalities around the world also use these VLRs as steering instruments or status reports for the sustainable development of their municipality. A VLR offers a holistic overview of all issues of a municipality (education level, poverty, car density, premature mortality, percentage of nature conservation area, etc.). We want to support other municipalities in the preparation of a VLR and show them the advantages of the VLR for their daily work.
Speaker:
- Christian Hübel, Head of Department Democracy and Strategy Mannheim
- Annette Turmann, Head of Department Global Sustainable Community
- Kirsten Korte, Zukunft Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar eV

URBAN LAB 1 // Lab and learning workshop for administration:
Gender-equitable communication with citizens / administration
Whether in city plans, applications, online forms, or guidance documents, language is a meta-level tool for talking about gender and equal opportunity. If gender is not present in language, the likelihood that different genders will also be fairly considered or feel addressed in urban design and management decreases.
Speaker:
- Dr. Simone Burel, Moderator and Managing Director LUB GmbH
- Noah Fleischer, CEO and UN Speaker on Gender Lens Investing
- Franziska Saur, Expert for Gender Equitable Language

Workshop with the urban community:
How is the European Charter for Equality between Women and Men implemented at the local level in Mannheim?
Speaker in this Lab was Prof. Dr. Sylvia Schraut, historian, emeritus Apl. Prof. University of Mannheim and University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich Chairwoman of the Association Women & History Baden-Württemberg e.V.
The EU Charter for Equality between Women and Men at Local Level was signed in Mannheim in 2011. The charter obliges cities and municipalities to promote equality in a variety of ways. In addition to securing resources, setting goals, priorities and measures, this includes, above all, developing an equality action plan and explicitly involving the city's society and gathering many opinions. In Mannheim, care was taken from the outset to ensure that experts from business, science, politics, administration and the community were involved in the creation of the first Equality Action Plan for the years 2019 - 2023, and that a Charter Advisory Board constantly accompanies and provides expert support for the implementation of the total of 22 projects in the Equality Action Plan. The EU Charter is being implemented not only in Mannheim, but also in many other European cities.
